This is my very first time living with a male cat. I never thought about the sex of the cats who owned me, other than wanting a female for a friend for Mouci. It just worked out this way. The kittens I’ve fostered have been so much fun – and I have to say that in 2/3 of the litters it was a little boy who really had me by the heart the most. They were (and still probably are) outgoing and very loving kitties.
I love that I learn new things every single time I foster. Here are a few things I’ve recently learned about boys:
- When I was trying to find out if Oscar was neutered – long before I captured him – Jenny at the rescue asked if he had a big head. A big head? What? Well, apparently unaltered males have larger heads. As I was reading recently, I learned that this is true – mating hormones lead to the development of jowls. I wonder whether the jowls would get smaller in the months after being fixed?
- If you neuter a male cat before he gains sexual maturity, he never develops the need or habit to spray around the house to mark his territory.
- If your male cat gets a vasectomy instead of neutering, he would be sterile but would retain all hormone-based activities such as yowling, spraying, stinky pee (hormone laced urine), desire to roam.
Not that Oscar cares about any of this. He loves to just sleep in the corner by my tub where I sit with him. I haven’t given him any calming remedy for a week now, and I don’t think I need to. He is so laid back. I’m back to petting him full-out now – all areas except the belly. He’s always head-butting me, so I can’t resist. I gave him catnip for the first time 2 days ago… and he’s a mellow-user. He doesn’t go bat-crap crazy like my old cat Nikita. He just licks it and chills. I also gave him Nuala’s mousey-mouse – a plush mouse which I saturate with catnip. He just licks it. He plays a little – swatting at a string I have with me – but it’s not crazy-play like Nuala’s style. Oscar is definitely a house cat – he wouldn’t know feral if it fell on him!
