Oscar is purring and happy near the window. He doesn’t know the good news yet: he’s got a Petfinder profile as of this morning. This is exciting since it will give him a better opportunity to find a wonderful home. He’s come so far in the past 4.5 months – and he deserves to live so much better than than the sparse struggle that was his cold existence.
Petfinder is a great service. It brings together 13000+ pet shelter and rescue groups from all over the continent. It offers a great way to find a forever companion, great info on pets, and a wonderful way that pets in need of homes can meet their forever-family. Their impact on animal welfare has been immense.
Whatever happens going forward, I am so glad I took him in. He falls between the cracks of the existing programs – there is no place for kitties like Oscar. Pet overpopulation, shelters and rescues filled beyond capacity, hospices and care homes pushed beyond their financial means by vet bills, and not enough involvement or assistance from all three levels of government. Oscar would be left out in the cold forever… I just believed in him and refused to leave him resigned to that fate. Martin Luther King Jr said it best: “Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”
